Giancarlo Tirado, 11, being recognized during school's morning announcements
DULUTH, GA (CBS46) -
Students at Radloff Middle School recognized a classmate Monday who rose above a learning disability and delivered a civil rights pledge to mark the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.
Giancarlo Tirado, 11, delivered the"Dreamkeeper's Pledge" last week at the Martin Luther King Jr., Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta.
The school's principal recognized Giancarlo in front of the entire student body via the school's closed-circuit televised announcements.
Giancarlo's mother told CBS Atlanta News that what her son did was more than an honor.
"It's a milestone," said Shirley Tirado.
Since he was a baby, Giancarlo has battled something known as Significant Developmental Delay.
"I have to remind him that he has to take what's in his mind and make words and speak," said his mom.
After years of therapy, much of it from the Gwinnett County School District, Giancarlo is now right on track.
"I had no mistakes, so yeah, it was good," Giancarlo said of his pledge delivery.
"To see him stand up in front of a crowd of hundreds of people and just speak, it was amazing," said his mother. "If you're a good communicator, the sky's the limit. You can be a speaker, a politician, somebody who reaches across nations and touches others' lives."
Giancarlo's moment in the spotlight is not lost on him.
"I think I'm a leader now because of that," he said.
