A quick-thinking 6-year-old and hard-working firefighters saved an iconic store near Lake Lanier.

Flames threatened The Dam Store around 11:55 p.m. Tuesday. The family who operates the business live adjacent to the retail section.

A son in the family of six alerted his family that he smelled smoke.

Noel Clark told CBS Atlanta news that her son Rhett was the first to smell the smoke.

"Thank goodness, we didn't see anything. I went and looked out side and that's how I saw the fire was downstairs blazing up the front of the building," said Clark.

Gwinnett County firefighters arrived to find the two-story part of the building engulfed in flames. A boat located close to the structure was also on fire.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the retail portion of the building where kayaks are rented. It also serves as a bait-and-tackle shop.

"We are fortunate that everyone was able to escape unharmed, especially given the intensity of the fire on arrival," said Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

No one was injured in the fire. The cause is under investigation.

The Dam Store has operated for around 60 years, according to fire officials.

"You worry about the business. But the only thing that matters is them [the kids]. So thank god they're alive," said Clark.
