Ga. woman sentenced for stealing federal benefits

ATLANTA (AP) -

Federal prosecutors say a metro Atlanta woman has been sentenced to more than a year in prison for stealing her dead parents' federal retirement benefits.

Officials said Wednesday that 64-year-old Deborah West of Norcross was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing nearly $399,000 in retirement benefits between 1993 and 2008.

Authorities say West's parents were both federal employees and her father's benefits were transferred to her mother when he died in 1980. West's mother died in 1993, but the federal government never learned of the woman's death and continued depositing benefits into her account.

Officials say West stole the money by forging checks from her mother's bank account and making them out to herself.

West is ordered to serve three years on supervised release after her sentence.
