ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Atlanta police are investigating a serious car accident that injured a 12-year-old boy.

The accident happened Saturday evening in southwest Atlanta on Centra Villa Drive and Venetian Drive.

Detectives said the boy ran into the street. After the accident, he was taken to Children's at Egleston Hospital in critical condition.

According to police, he was breathing but not alert when police arrived at the scene, and he suffered serious head injuries.

Alfred Askew told CBS Atlanta News that his wife is devastated after hitting the boy.

"She swerved, she said, to try to miss the kid," said Askew. "She is real nervous anyway. With something like this I know she is upset. I hate that I can't be rights there with her."

Police told CBS Atlanta News that the driver didn't do anything wrong.

But neighbor Gus Pritchett told CBS Atlanta News that motorists spread up and down Centra Villa Drive on a regular basis.

"It's unsafe to get your mail out of the mailbox. It's unsafe for kids coming up from Venetian at the hill up this street. I've been here 35 years and it's gotten worse," said Pritchett.

Investigators said the driver will not face charges.
