Tree crashes onto house, destroys roof

Posted: Updated:

Folks in one DeKalb County community woke up this Labor Day without power thanks to a downed tree.

Just after 7 a.m., a huge tree fell on two homes on Jordan Lane in Decatur, knocking out power to 46 homes.

George Robinson heard a loud crack as the tree fell.

"It's real bad right now because we don't have any lights in the community," Robinson said.

Robinson immediately got dressed to check on his long time elderly neighbors.

"My first thought was well they are trapped and can't anybody get out, and I was hoping that nobody was hurt," Robinson said.

Robinson got his wish. Even after the massive tree destroyed his neighbor's front porch, everyone inside the home remained safe and sound.

A brief but powerful storm swept through Atlanta Sunday afternoon, packing heavy rain, strong wind and lightning.

Neighbors on South Gordon Street said lighting hit a tree, sending it toppling onto a house.

Sederius Smith had just pulled into his driveway when he saw the scary scene of a tree crashing atop his neighbor's home.

"It was a loud thunder and the tree came down," Smith said. "I looked up and was like, ‘Wow!'"

Shawanna Gaston said the sight was terrifying.

"Very scary. I was like, ‘Oh my God!'" Gaston said.

The lighting struck with fear-inspiring force.

Richard McCormick, at first, thought the tree hit his house, but when he looked outside he realized he dodged a very destructive bullet.

"That is amazing. No. 1, I'm glad nobody got hurt. No. 2, I'm glad it didn't drop on my house," McCormick said.

Neighbors said no one was inside the home at the time the tree fell.

No one was hurt.
