BARTOW COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Georgia DNR officials said they have recovered the body of a drowning victim at Red Top Mountain State Park on Lake Allatoona.

DNR spokesman Rick Lavender said Nicholas Alexander, 23, of Atlanta, dove off a rental boat in the area of the park's swimming beach Sunday, just after 5 p.m. Sunday.

According to DNR Law Enforcement Division Sgt. Mike Barr, Alexander was with a family group on the rental boat.

The boat was near the rock jetty, about 75 feet from shore.

Alexander asked how deep the water was, and was told it was deep. He jumped in and, according to witnesses, was swimming fine initially. Then he began to struggle.

Witnesses on shore said they heard him call for help. Two people on shore tried unsuccessfully to reach him.

His body was recovered at 6:18 p.m. Sunday in about 30 feet of water. Officials with the DNR, Bartow County Fire/EMA and the U.S. Corps of Engineers helped recover Alexander's body.

There is no indication drugs or alcohol played any part in the incident.
