TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

Labor Day weekend means lots of locals and tourists both downtown and at the beach.

Thousands of people come every year to enjoy Tybee Island during the Labor Day weekend.

It's a holiday that business owners like Susan Kelleher look forward to every year.

"Labor Day is one of the best. Our sales have steadily grown since I've been in business every single year," she said.

Kelleher owns Seaside Sisters, an eclectic store that sells antiques, jewelry, candles, clothing and more.

"We have something for everybody, we even have a little man cave," said Kelleher.

Seaside Sisters has been in business for six years and stays open year-round.

For Labor Day, the store featured a "Clear the Deck" sale offering up to a 60 percent discount on certain items.

Kelleher also owns Seaside Sweets, a gelato shop that's located further down by the Tybee Pier.

So far she's seen business increase roughly 15 percent at Seaside Sisters while the sweets shop has gone up almost 50 percent, thanks to its location and the hot weather.

Kelleher, who serves on the Tybee Island Tourism Council Board, says hotels and vacation rentals are also reaping the benefits of the Labor Day holiday.

"This weekend they are totally sold out and probably could have sold out almost twice of what they could have done," she said.

"It's been really wonderful, we've lucked out with a really beautiful weekend, so there's been lots of sunshine and we've had lots of visitors on the island from out of town and from the Savannah area," said Casey Slone, Special Events Manager, Tybee Island Tourism Council.

Even locals like Beth Whitfield are noticing the extra foot traffic on Tybee Island this year.

"You love to see the tourists, you love to see the people just happy, live free, just enjoying themselves, it's the place to be out here," said Whitfield.

And after a day of shopping and relaxing on the beach, Tybee guests were entertained by the musical talents of the 'Swingin' Medallions.'

Many businesses like Seaside Sweets stayed open late Sunday night to make the most of their sales.
