DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

DeKalb County police said one of their officers was forced to shoot a burglary suspect Tuesday morning.

It all started around 10:30 a.m. on Streamside Court when Prince Norwood heard the sound of someone trying to break into her house.

She hid in her closet and called 911, then phoned her husband.

"My immediate response was call 911," said James Norwood.  "She said 'I already called them. They're on their way.' Then she went off the phone, and I couldn't get in touch with her no more, so that was really a shock, disturbing to me."

Two of the suspects hid in the attic and were arrested while a third one took off on foot.

A close friend said the suspects looked into the closet Prince Norwood was hiding in.

"One of the assailants came upstairs searching in the same closet she was in," said Harry Ramsey. "Just so happened they didn't see her.  Somebody hollered out from downstairs ‘police officer, police coming.'"

Officers later found the man hiding in a shed on Leisure Springs Circle near Decatur, around two miles from the home he is suspected of entering.

When the officer rounded the corner with his K-9, the man jumped out of the shed. The officer fired one shot and struck the man in the arm. He was taken into custody.

"He startled both the dog and the officer," said DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander. "The officer, of course, fired one round, hitting the subject, feeling threatened  for his own life and his own safety."

The injury to the suspect is not life-threatening.

The officer was unharmed. He is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

"I wish she hadn't been home because it would have been a better thing for them to just take whatever they want and leave because all that can be replaced," said James Norwood. "I can't replace her.  My only concern was her."
