Metro Atlanta thieves target smartphones

Georgia Tech students walk down the streets, talking and texting on their smart phones, paying little attention to their surroundings.

Valeska Lobo, a fourth-year student, said she has been one of them.

"I'll see people with headphones walking around with their smartphones out," Lobo said. "I've been out with my headphones, not really caring."

Walking around with a smartphone makes people targets for criminals who want mobile devices. Police said that last weekend robbers stole two iPhone 4s's from two students.

The thefts are not just happening around Georgia Tech.

Gwinnett County Police Department Cpl. Jake Smith said crooks are looking for people with smartphones.

"It's a target in almost every theft or robbery case we see. They're expensive and they're easy to run around," Smith said.

Smith said criminals typically resell the phones to people they know, but they can end up anywhere - even overseas.

"They were traveling into eastern Europe, Russia and areas like that," Smith said.

The phones cost a little less than they do in the stores.

"Somebody with a brand new iPhone 5 can usually sell it for several hundred dollars," Smith said.

Lobo said she will be extra careful.

"I take precaution not to do it anymore because you can never be too aware of your surroundings," Lobo said.
