Fallen Villa Rica soldier honored

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Funeral services were held at Central Baptist Church for a fallen soldier from Villa Rica.

A processional also took place from the funeral home to the Church along Rose Avenue, Georgia Highway 5, Kings Highway and Central Church Road.

A Department of Defense official said Staff Sgt. Joshua J. Bowden, 28, died Aug. 31 in Ghazni, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire while on dismounted patrol.

Bowden was a 2003 graduate of Alexander High School in Douglas County.

He joined the Army in 2005 and was on his second deployment to Afghanistan.

His awards include the Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal with Valor Device, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, Parachute Badge, Air Assault Badge and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge.

Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
