Ga. deer hunting season to open Saturday

Posted: Updated:

Archery hunters are sharpening their arrow heads and waxing their bow strings. The are getting ready for the start of deer hunting season in Georgia.

According to Georgia's Department of Natural Resources the deer hunting season officially begins Sept. 14.

Department spokeswoman Melissa Cumming said last year, more than 113,500 archers harvested nearly 60,200 deer. The hunting season ends in January.

Chief of Game Management John Bowers said heavy rain this spring and summer led to more natural foods, which should translate to an increase in deer quality.

Cummings said many public hunting grounds offer specialty hunts, including primitive weapons, adult and child hunts and ladies only hunts.

Hunters are allowed to harvest a maximum of 10 antlerless deer and two deer with antlers per season.
