Nursing home experts: 'Do your homework'

Posted: Updated:

Those who work in the nursing home field said it is important that families placing loved ones in facilities do research first.

The advice comes after the owner of a Marietta nursing home was charged with running an unlicensed and filthy facility.

"I really suggest that people do their homework and when I say homework, I mean when you're touring the community, pop in at different times," said Cindy Richards, sales manager at Atria, a senior living community in Buckhead. "Don't set up a certain time to have the tour."

Melanie McNeil of the Dept. of Human Services told CBS Atlanta the state has a number of resources with information on nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Those interested can go on the Internet and find out if a facility is licensed and how it fared on its annual inspection. Complaints can also be filed online.

McNeil said some key questions to ask:

  • Do residents look happy and engaged?
  • Is the staff friendly and interested in the residents?
  • Does the facility smell clean?
  • What kind of activities does it offer?

But experts said talking to those familiar with a senior home is very important.

"I've had people come in to say we visited this other place and we didn't get to go talk to family members, or we didn't get to talk to residents," said Atria Executive Director Susan White. " That would be concerning to me. I wouldn't leave my mom somewhere where I wouldn't have the opportunity to check out the entire community."
