With park renovations underway, Fairburn leaders say best is yet to come

FAIRBURN, GA (CBS46) -

City leaders in Fairburn cut the ribbon at the newly-renovated play ground at Duncan Park on Saturday morning. The renovation represents the first step in several planned renovations at the park between now and the new year.

Mayor Mario Avery said the project represents a $5 million investment by tax payers, after 71 percent of Fairburn residents voted in favor of the tax increase in November of 2010.

"This has been a project that's been almost two, two and a half years in the making," said Avery, who was so excited about the new playground that he took a trip down the slide after cutting the ribbon.

The park had been owned by Fulton County until the city acquired it using a portion of the $5 million tax payer money. Avery said the park had recently fallen into disrepair after years of neglect.

However, with a new playground open, and renovations coming to the tennis courts, basketball courts, parking lot, and youth football field, Avery said he is hopeful the park will again become a beacon for the community.
