Mother of boys nearly kidnapped from home speaks out
DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -
Shaundrea Smith still cannot believe a stranger walked into her home and tried to take away her two young sons on Friday afternoon.
"I think any normal parents wouldn't really be thinking about themselves at that point or what would happen to them. They would be focused on their child," Smith said.
Smith said she was napping in her room while her 3-year-old and 6-year-old sons watched TV in their room, and a man came in through her front door. She isn't sure if he picked the lock or if it had been accidentally left open. But when Smith saw that man, she said she tried not to panic.
"When I saw him he had my oldest son's bookbag on his shoulder and had both of my sons by the arms, and that's when I kind of lost it," Smith said.
The mother immediately leaped into action.
"I just stayed calm and asked him, ‘Who are you? Why are you in my house?'" Smith said. "I did hit him and push him and grab both of my children and pushed them behind me."
Smith said she pushed the man down her stairs and out of her house, told her children to stay upstairs, and chased after him.
"The only thought in my head was that if I didn't go after him and do anything, he'd probably be walking in someone else's house next," Smith said.
Police eventually arrested Musa Lang, 32, who was sitting in a nearby Zaxby's, and charged him with burglary and kidnapping. Smith said he didn't seem "well."
"I don't know what his intentions were," Smith said. "I just knew something wasn't right with him - he didn't seem normal."
Smith has advice for parents, should they ever find themselves in a similar situation.
"Try to think rationally and think about the best course of action before he or whomever gets the chance to go off with your kids," Smith said.
