Fitness guru brings top-notch facilities to metro Atlanta schools

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

You might remember Jake Steinfeld as the guy on those popular Body by Jake exercise shows back in the 90s. These days he's helping kids at three metro Atlanta schools improve their health and fitness.

Steinfeld, chairman of the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils, will stand alongside other dignitaries Monday to cut the ribbon on Harper Archer Middle School's new state-of-the-art "Live Positively Fitness Center."

Harper Archer Middle School was one of three Georgia schools selected as a National Champion School earlier this year for their efforts in promoting physical fitness innovation and healthy living standards to their students.

The other two winning schools were Berkmar Middle School in Lilburn and C.L. Gideons Elementary in Atlanta.

The National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils program will roll out to all 50 states in the coming years. The goal is to build a nation of the fittest, healthiest kids in the world by providing schools with the tools they need to succeed.

What makes the program even more attractive, according to organizers, is that it does not rely on taxpayer dollars or state funding. Each fitness center is financed through a public/private sector partnership with companies like The Coca-Cola Company.
