Family: Dad dying because of poor care at Atlanta VA hospital

DECATUR, GA (CBS46) -

A local family is lashing out at the Atlanta VA Medical Center after they say the hospital botched a routine procedure and now their father is dying.

A Korean war veteran, Joseph Carnegie went to the hospital in August to have a tracheotomy tube replaced.  His son-in-law, Michael Coleman, said the staff made mistakes during the operation and flooded Carnegie's body with sodium.

"He got salt poisoning and instead of listening to the family and telling us what's really happening with our dad, they tried to cover it up and they blatantly lied to us about it," said Coleman.

The ordeal comes on the heels of other problems the Carnegie family has had with the VA system.  Coleman said they found a hidden camera in their father's room at a VA hospital in Tampa, were mailed the wrong medication for their father and also received medical records from other patients.

"I'm willing to walk from Atlanta, GA, to Washington, DC, not just for my dad but for every vet that has suffered here and died prematurely," said Coleman.

The medical center could not comment on the accusations due to patient confidentiality but released this statement:  "The Atlanta VA Medical Center remains fully committed to providing all of our veterans the high quality health care that they deserve and have earned."

Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-GA, told CBS Atlanta that he would look into the allegations.

"I'm always eager to help when veterans or their family members come to my office with complaints about the care they receive at the VA. I along with my staff are looking into this situation," said Isakson via email.
