Pickens deputies investigating possible sexual assault at middle school

PICKENS COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

According to the Pickens County Sheriff's Office, a student at Pickens County Middle School may have been sexually assaulted by another student last week.

Lt. Kris Stancil said the office was notified of the assault when the student was hospitalized Thursday evening.

According to Stancil, the 8th grade boy claimed he was assaulted inside the school by another male student. Stancil said the boy is doing better physically.

Investigators are reviewing hours of video from school surveillance cameras to determine where the assault happened.

There is no evidence to suggest that an intruder entered the campus, according to deputies. Authorities believe this was an isolated incident that involved student-on-student contact.

Stancil said,"as a parent of a student who goes to the same school, I'm 100 percent confident in their safety and the job the faculty is doing."

Superintendent Lula Mae Perry sent a letter to parents asking for cooperation and patience.

"We ask that you keep the family in your thoughts and prayers. We share the worry and the anxiety you have for your children because we feel they are our children as well. We will work together as a community to answer the questions raised by this serious event," said Perry.

In a separate statement to media, Perry said if it is determined the assault took place on campus, the district will work with the Sheriff's Office and the GBI to determine how and why it happened.
