SMYRNA, GA (CBS46) -

A 7-year-old Smyrna boy is recovering after possibly being bitten by a small shark in Florida.

It happened Wednesday morning in the water on Panama City Beach.

When Bay County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived, they found the boy with an injury to his ankle.

The child's mother told deputies she heard her son screaming and ran to him in the water and picked him up.

According to the child's mother, the child was standing in ankle deep water when he was injured.

No one saw a shark or any other marine animal in the water near the child.

The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The child's mother said the doctor treating her son told her the puncture wounds on her son's foot were more than likely caused by a small hammerhead shark or a nurse shark.
