CANTON, GA (CBS46) -

Members of the Cherokee High School marching band received some exciting news Thursday. They've been invited to perform in London's New Year's Day Parade 2015.

A high-ranking British dignitary visited the school to personally deliver the invitation. Lord Mayor Catherine Longworth is a former mayor of the city of Westminster and is a principal patron of the parade, which is considered one of the world's great street spectaculars.

"I just love watching marching bands," Longworth told CBS Atlanta News. "We don't have anything like it in the U.K. at all. I mean, there are some community bands, but not the size or the talent or the expertise that you have here in the states."

Cherokee High School's band is one of only 16 in the world chosen to perform in the parade during which more than 8,000 performers from all corners of the globe entertain a street audience of more than 500,000 and a global television audience of tens of millions.

Band director Garrick Chayne is thrilled for his students.

"To watch them grow and then be rewarded for their hard work is just a tremendous lesson they can carry with them hopefully for years to come, the rest of their lives," he said.

The parade is set for Jan. 1, 2015.
