Bishop Larry Shaw may be out of the military but he is fighting for his reputation. Tuesday he filed a defamation lawsuit against Bishop John Sheard, from Detroit, and William McCray III, an Atlanta area blogger and elder in the Church of God in Christ. Shaw claims Sheard offered McCray $10,000 to publicize a letter on McCray's website. Shaw claims the letter falsely accuses him of raping, sodomizing and exposing a woman to Aids.
Shaw said the letter first came out in 2000 as way to keep him from becoming Bishop. He said an investigation ultimately determined the accusations were not true and he was elected.
"Twelve years later there was a disagreement between myself and the board of Bishops, and when he couldn't find anything on me, he asked the bishop in that area, is there anything on Shaw and they were able to dig up a 12-year-old letter," Shaw said.
CBS Atlanta tried contacting Sheard and McCray, but no one responded to our phone calls and messages. Shaw said he wants justice.
"To have two men of the cloth going at each other like this is unfortunate, because our church, we are better than this," said Shaw.
