Evelyn Gibson Lowery to be laid to rest

Posted: Updated:

It was a celebration fit for a queen at Morehouse college Wednesday.

Dr. Joseph Lowery was joined by friends and family from around the world to say goodbye to his wife, Evelyn Lowery.

"I've never heard her say bad words about anybody, even when people have wronged her. She was generous in spirit," said Karen Reagle, a friend and co-worker.

"Mrs. Lowery will always be remembered as a trailblazer, a distinguished leader of leaders. We are grateful for this great spirit who walked among us," said Carolyn Young, a friend and co-worker.

Working with her husband, and as founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now, Evelyn Lowery worked tirelessly for the rights of everyone and along the way helped change the country and world.

"Her life's work will ensure that Evelyn Gibson Lowery will be remembered as a great women in her own right," said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

"Children unborn will live a better life because Joseph and Evelyn Lowery gave their all," said Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist.

Her accomplishments aside, what people said they will miss the most is Evelyn Lowery's strength and presence.

"I will always remember her infectious laugh and the fact that they brought so much to the community," said former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell.

"Go on home now Mrs. Lowery, you fought the good fight, you kept the faith, you finished the cause. You stood by your husband in the heat of the day, it's time to go home now, we will see you when we get home," said Sharpton.

Evelyn Lowery founded S.C.L.C. WOMEN, Inc., created the annual Drum Major for Justice Awards and the annual Evelyn G. Lowery Civil Rights Heritage Educational Tour.

Interment will take place at Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Dr., Atlanta, GA 30314.
