Tenants protest living conditions at apartment complex

Posted: Updated:

For tenants living at the Creekside Corners Apartments in Lithonia, management advertises private balconies, a swimming pool and a fitness center as some of the luxuries.

"It's luxury living when you look at it from eye view, but once you get in here they treat you like a ghetto mentality," Tenant Patricia Douglas said.

Douglas said she's lived at Creekside Corners for seven years and she believes management is not living up to their standards, so she organized a peaceful protest outside the complex Tuesday.

"We've got broken gates, wires hanging out, people who have gotten their cars hit by the gate and they're not responsible," Douglas said.

So in hopes of improving conditions, Douglas said she held a meeting on the property with dozens of other frustrated tenants, many of whom signed a petition calling for change.

"I'm trying to do what Dr. Martin Luther King would have us to do when we have an issue. Do it respectfully. Then people will hear you," Douglas said.

Not only did management hear Douglas, she said they served her an eviction notice and told her she was in violation of her lease when she handed out fliers on the property about the meeting she held with tenants.

So CBS Atlanta News went to the leasing office in search of some answers, but we were immediately told to leave.

"I feel in my heart I must do this. If they put me out, I still must do this," Douglas said.

Douglas said she was told she would have to vacate the property on Oct. 24. She said if they would just grant her a meeting with the regional manager to discuss the issues, she would be satisfied.
