School board member fined for violating code of ethics

Posted: Updated:

The Cherokee County School Board found that school board member Kelly Marlow violated board policy and their code of ethics.

The board handed down their decision after a lengthy ethics hearing Wednesday night.

Marlow has served on the board since Jan. 1 of this year.

The Cherokee County Board of Education member from District one was found to have violated the code of ethics when she sent a letter to AdvanceED Georgia. They are part of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools that grant accreditation to all school districts in the state.

In that letter dated June 11, Marlow said, "It is my opinion that the Board of Education in Cherokee County is no longer able to effectively govern the school system."

According to the school board members, Marlow broke at least two rules itemized in the code of conduct policy.

The district pointed towards two sections that state, "Recognize that the authority of the board rests only with the board as a whole and not with individual board members and act accordingly."

The second rule of the board policy states that Ms. Marlow violated her conduct as a board member because she did not "communicate in a respectful professional manner with and about fellow board members."

After a four hour long ethics hearing, the board found Marlow guilty and fined her $3,600.

Marlow did not make any comments as she left the board of education building.

In July, Marlow was arrested for making false statements to police. According to Canton police, Marlow filed a false police report that claimed the Cherokee County Schools Superintendent Frank Petruzielo tried to hit her with his car.

That case is yet to go before a grand jury.
