Alabama church arsonists seek early release

Posted: Updated:

A former college student in prison for church arson apologized during a court hearing where he sought an early release.

Benjamin Moseley appeared in Bibb County Circuit Court on Thursday. He called the nine church fires in 2006 "senseless actions," and asked for forgiveness from the congregations affected.

His co-defendant, Matthew Cloyd, was not in court. They are seeking release on probation from the two-year state sentences they are serving after completing their federal sentences for the fires.

District Attorney Michael Jackson argued they should serve their full sentences if they want to take full responsibility. Circuit Judge Marvin Wiggins did not indicate when he will rule.

A third defendant who admitted being involved in five of the fires, Russell DeBusk, got an early release from prison in 2012.
