ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Do you need a new washing machine? Or maybe a dishwasher?

This weekend Georgia shoppers will not have to pay sales tax on big appliances that have the ENERGY STAR label and a purchase price of $1500 or less per item.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, ENERGY STAR is a voluntary program that helps people save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency. Established in 1992, it identifies products that reduce pollution and utility costs.

Tax-exempt items include:

  • Air Conditioners
  • Ceiling Fans
  • Clothes Washers
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Dishwashers
  • Doors
  • Fluorescent Light Bulbs
  • Programmable Thermostats
  • Refrigerators
  • Windows

The items below will be exempt from sales tax if they have been assigned a WaterSense label and have a purchase price of $1,500 or less, per item:

  • Bathroom Sink Faucets
  • Faucet Accessories (such as aerators)
  • High-Efficiency Toilets
  • High-Efficiency Urinals
  • Showerheads
  • Weather- or Sensor-Based Irrigation Controllers

The sales tax exemption is not applicable to ENERGY STAR or WaterSense products purchased for trade, business or resale.
