DECATUR, GA (CBS46) -

Nearly 800 people gathered in downtown Atlanta on Saturday morning to begin a two-day, 30 mile walk around the city to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness.

Many people walked in the Atlanta Two Day Walk for Breast Cancer to support family members battling the illness. Others walked to celebrate their own recovery, while some walked in memory of those who succumbed in their battle against the cancer.

"I feel like I'm kind of doing this for my mom," said Kate Daniels, who lost her mother Trudy to breast cancer on Dec. 15. "I knew she would do this if she could."

Daniels was part of a group of 47 walkers that raised more than $50,000 prior to their 30 mile walk. Every walker was asked to raise at least $1,000 before they took part in both days of the walk.

"This is such a great weekend that we all look forward to every year," said group organizer Katie Barkley.

Barkley said her group, "Breasta Fiesta," spends most of the year planning for the next two-day walk.

"It starts again next year," said Barkley. "We start tomorrow raising money for next year."
