Elderly man accused of pulling gun on protesters

Marj Moore said she first met 84-year-old Roy Smith a little more than a week ago while she and a couple of friends were holding up signs calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama.

The women were on Steve Reynolds Boulevard where it crosses I-85.

"A lot of our signs say 'Honk if you agree' and we get so many honks and it's really fun. We just have a really good time," Moore said.

Moore said she was having fun until Smith drove up.

"I saw this car stop, and I looked in the window, and he leaned over and he was saying something to me. He then leaned over and he threw something on me, and just before he did that, my friend Toni hollered, 'He's got a gun'. You hear someone has a gun, you're going to be scared to death," Moore said.

Moore said Smith didn't like what she and her friends were saying.

"He didn't like our politics. He said when he saw the sign and everything, it made him mad," said Moore.

Moore said Smith drove off but not before a good Samaritan wrote down the car's licence plate number. Police later arrested Smith.

"I am glad he got caught. I'm sorry about the age, I feel really bad about the age, but he really has no right to do that no matter what the age," Moore said.

Smith has been charged with two counts of simple assault and one count of pointing a firearm at someone. All three are misdemeanors. Smith told police he is not guilty.
