CONYERS, GA (CBS46) -

A man is recovering in the hospital after an explosion in the 3000 block of South Gate Trail on Tuesday night.

Emergency crews found Kiley Payne on the living room couch in extreme pain.

According to Captain McCullough with the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, there was an apparent explosion that occurred in the laundry room.

"I heard a loud, loud noise," said neighbor Rosalind Madison. "It sounded like a gunshot."

There were holes in the wall and several small pieces of orange of plastic all around the room, according to Captain McCullough.

Investigators spoke with Payne's wife, Emily Payne, who said she was in the kitchen making dinner when she heard a loud explosion. She called 911 when he collapsed on the floor.

Kiley Payne's son Gavin Payne told officials he and his dad had just shot off some bottle rockets in the street and came back in to make some more.

The crime scene was turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, and Firearms.

Chief Deputy Scott Freeman told CBS Atlanta News the explosion may have been accidental but investigators want to be sure that Payne was not building explosives for illegal use.

"Anytime you have an explosion like this where life is not lost, it's very fortunate," said Freeman.
