Three held without bond for cruelty to children in Duluth

Posted: Updated:

A grandmother, her boyfriend and her son were arrested for neglecting two young children.

Felicia Eckert, 42, Edward Prince, 47, and Nicholas George, 21, are all held without bond.

Gwinnett County police said they received a tip Friday night that two children had been by themselves for a couple of hours and there were drugs in the house.

When officers responded, they said they saw two children, a 2-year boy and 1-year old girl, in the dark in the home in the 2000 block of Inverloch Circle in Duluth.

The report reads in part, "The young boy who appeared to be around 2 years old was on his back, strapped into the car seat. He was unable to get out. The car seat had no padding at all on it..." It goes on to say a girl around the age of 1 was in a playpen with a cardboard bottom.

Officers said both children were soaked in urine. Paramedics responded and reported the boy had an extreme case of diaper rash and open sores.

According to the police report, officers found bleach spilled on the floor and cockroaches running throughout the house.

Officers said Nicholas George was next door and was suppose to check on the children.

When Felicia Eckert, the grandmother, arrived home, she gave this explanation for putting her grandson in the car seat: "...when I have to go upstairs, for a nap, or when I have to go to the bathroom, because if I do not, he will play with the stove or get into something else."

Police said they also found drugs in the home.

The Department of Family and Children Services took custody of the girl and boy, as well as another child who was not at the home at the time.

Eckert, George and Prince face a list of charges including cruelty to children and reckless conduct.
