ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A photographer went out to shoot some pictures overnight but ended up shooting it out with two men trying to rob him.

The photographer, who did not want to be identified, had just gotten out of his car on Peachtree Road, up the block from Rumson Road in Buckhead.

He was about to shoot some self portraits in the solitude of the early morning and quickly found out someone with bad intentions was watching him.

As he got out of his car, two men approached. Both had their guns drawn. One only spoke these few words.

"Are you a photographer? That's cool. Give me your keys," the photographer explained.

One of the criminals opened fire from just 10 feet away.

"How this guy fired a shot in my direction and didn't hit me, I don't know," the photographer said.

 The would-be robbers kept shooting.

The photographer pulled out his own gun and fired back, striking one of the men.

"The first guy ran," the photographer said.

The other man jumped in a car and drove off.

The photographer was unhurt.

"I'm extremely fortunate that's as far as it went. There's no reason for me to be here right now," the photographer said.

The photographer flagged down a nearby state trooper.

The gunmen got away.

The photographer, who said he was never scared, kept his cool and fought back the best way he knew how to save his own life.

"Don't ever run up on somebody and expect them not to retaliate," the photographer said.
