Contractor disappears after taking family's money

Posted: Updated:

A metro Atlanta family issued a warning Friday for other consumers who plan to hire a home improvement contractor.

Chris and Julie Adams hired their lawn guy a few months ago to build a new patio and fire pit in their back yard.

"We liked him, he was a nice guy. No reason not to trust him," Chris Adams said.

They paid Terrance J. Williams with Atlandta Lawnscape nearly $5,000 up front. That was 50 percent of the total cost of the job.

"He built a very small retaining wall that did us no good, and then after about a month of that he just disappeared," Julie Adams said.

Once they realized they may not see or hear from Williams again, they paid another company more than $14,000 to complete the project.

"I didn't want to believe that he just walked away with the money. We thought, no, he wouldn't do that. We know him," Chris Adams said.

What they didn't know is that court records show that a man by the same name owed thousands of dollars in child support dating back to 2008.

Neighbor Susan Taylor said she, too, paid Williams for work he never completed.

"We gave him the $1,200 up front because he had a reputation in the neighborhood. He cut the grass three times and took off and couldn't find him again," Taylor said.

So CBS Atlanta News went searching for Williams to get his side of the story, but he was nowhere to be found.

"Filing in small claims court was going to be the last step and when the sheriff couldn't find him we just thought, 'well now we're completely out of options,'" Julie Adams said.
