Off-duty deputy who saved seniors from house fire talks to CBS Atlanta

Rockdale County Sheriff's Deputy Timothy Kutsch may try to avoid the spotlight, but he can't because of what he did last week.

"The flames were 30-40 feet above the roof of the building, and it was spreading pretty quick," Kutsch said.

Kutsch was on his way to his home in Walton County when he stumbled upon a house fire at a senior living facility, so he stopped to help.

"The room was just covered in smoke, you couldn't see two feet inside the room and when I looked down and just inside the window, I could see the top half of an elderly woman's body," Kutsch said.

Kutschs saved the woman from suffering the same fate as the roof, walls and furnishing in the home.

"I was yelling to her trying to get her responsive and she wouldn't respond, so that is when I started reaching in and started pulling her out the window," Kutsch said.

Kutsch needed nearly a dozen stitches for a wound on his arm, but he and the woman he pulled from the home survived. The next day he met the woman's family.

"The daughter teared up and everything, and gave me a big hug. It was pretty cool. You know we don't do it for the money, we don't do it for the hours, we do it because we love to do it, we love to help people, we like to help people. It is a great payoff," Kutsch said.

Although many may be tempted because of what he did, don't call him a hero.

"I don't think I am by any means. I was just in the right place at the right time," Kutsch said.
