911 tape released in 12-year-old's death

Paulding County officials released the 911 tape of a father who called to report his 12-year-old son may have drowned.

Shayaa Forbes called rescue crews on Oct. 11. He said his son was not breathing and may have drowned in the bathtub at the family's home on North Springs Way in Dallas.

911 operator: "Do you know how long he's been in the bathtub?"

Forbes: "It couldn't have been that long because I just checked on him. And when I came back in, he was just dead.  I was like … I thought he might have been asleep or something."

Paramedics arrived at Forbes' home on North Springs Drive and found the child unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead.

Paulding County sheriff's deputies said they found the child had cuts, bruises and human bite marks on him. They arrested Forbes and charged him with child cruelty.

"It's very touching," said Cpl. Ashley Henson. "It's so disturbing to know that someone would do this to a child, especially their own child."

Investigators are still waiting for results of an autopsy to determine if additional charges will be filed.

Neighbors said Forbes appeared to be a model father, who often played with his two children.

"It's frustrating something like that could have happened, and I didn't notice anything," said Ashlee Smith, who lives next door.

Eric Forbes was a student at McClure Middle School in Dallas. School officials said counselors were available to address any questions or concerns staff and students may have.
