Father formally charged in child abuse case

Posted: Updated:

Sheriff's deputies formally charged a Paulding County father with the murder of his 12-year-old son.

Shayaa Yusef Forbes, 32, was charged with felony murder and two counts of child cruelty.

According to reports, Forbes called rescue crews on Oct. 11. He said his son Eric Forbes was not breathing and may have drowned in the bathtub at the family's home on North Springs Way in Dallas.

Paramedics arrived at Forbes' home on North Springs Drive and found the child unresponsive. Police said the boy had cuts, bruises and human bite marks on his body.

The GBI's preliminary autopsy report indicates the death was a homicide but the agency has not yet released the exact cause.

"That's been the question, how far back does this abuse go?" said Cpl. Ashley Henson. "Right now, it's still too early in the investigation to determine how far back it's gone. I think that's why the autopsy results are taking a bit of time because there are so many extensive injuries."

Neighbors said they had no idea anything was wrong inside the home.

"I was totally shocked," said Curtis Stacy, a neighbor. "I think everybody else in this neighborhood will be shocked. I thought the kid was his whole world."

Police said it is often difficult to spot child abuse.

"You just never know what people do behind closed doors," said Henson.

Investigators will talk with the boy's younger sister to see if she suffered any alleged abuse. She is in the custody of children's services.

Forbes made another court appearance Wednesday morning and remains in jail without bond.

Detectives continue their investigation into the case and urging anyone that has information about the Forbes case to call them at 770-445-6105.
