2 parties bicker over blame for parks shutdown

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON (AP) -

Republicans and Democrats are battling over who's to blame for one of the most high-profiles casualties of the government shutdown: the national parks.

At a House hearing Wednesday, Democratic Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon held up a mirror and invited Republicans to look at it to find the cause of the shutdown.

Governors in at least five states have reopened parks such as the Grand Canyon and Statue of Liberty, but Republicans say the moves are too little, too late.

Republican Rep. Doc Hasting of Washington state says the National Park Service intentionally made the shutdown as painful and visible as possible.

Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis denies that. He's asking Congress to reopen the government so his agency can reopen all 401 national park units.
