ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Demolition crews are removing debris after they tore down three abandoned apartment buildings in downtown Atlanta.

Crews started demolishing this building on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard Wednesday.

Two other buildings on Martin Luther King Drive were also torn down.

People called the structures safety hazards.

Mayor Kasim Reed said code enforcement officers worked tirelessly take over the abandoned properties from deadbeat owners. It allowed him to make good on a promise to get rid of the eyesores - making room for beautification that will include a new city park.

"This is going to make MLK stand for what it is - MLK. It should be the best street in Atlanta right here because of what he [Reed] did," said Catherine Beckom.

Atlanta officials said they plan to demolish 25 other rundown buildings in the next 30 days.
