Cats enjoy new space to roam at Fulton Co. shelter

Posted: Updated:

The cats waiting to be adopted at Fulton County Animal Services are stretching their legs a lot more often thanks to a newly renovated cat room.

Purina Cat Chow donated the money for the remodeling.

"We're very excited to get a $30,000 renovation grant to change what was once a closet, pretty much, into this beautiful free range cat area where adopters can come in and sit down and interact with the cats as opposed to just try to stick their finger through the cage and try to pick their pet that way," said Lara Hudson, the director of Fulton County Animal Services.

Purina chose Fulton County's facility, along with three others nationwide as a way to celebrate 50 years in business. The program, called "50 Years. 50 Shelters." raised funds for 50 shelters, one in each state. For most of those shelters, Purina donated care packages of supplies worth $1,000.

Hudson said she's thrilled that the company chose her shelter for one of its larger projects.

"You don't walk in and feel sad when you leave. In a typical shelter, you might," she said. "You walk in and you're like, ‘It's not so bad here.'"

"It's complete open space," said Megan McGovern, a Purina Cat Chow representative. "There's now a free-roaming cat colony, new open adoption counseling spaces for the workers here, both for the cats and the dogs who are looking for new homes. It's a much better environment."

If you're thinking about adopting a cat, consider this:  Through Sunday, Fulton County Animal Services will waive the $65 cat adoption fee for people who mention that they saw the segment on CBS Atlanta News.
