GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

On Thursday, Oct. 10, it was the first and it ended up being the last time Jasmine Thomas, 21, would hang out with her new friend Chelsea Gerrish, 20.

"They told me Chelsea didn't make it and my heart dropped. I immediately started crying. I know she has her son, her new house. I was just overwhelmed," said Thomas.

Thomas was in the backseat, Gerrish was driving and their friend Maitae Archbold was asleep in the passenger seat.

"Our last conversations were about how much Chelsea loved her kid and how she's trying to provide for him, how she's trying to find a new job and all the things she needs to do," said Thomas. "We were telling her it's going to work out, that she was going to get there and we are going to help her."

In an instant their lives changed. They had no clue that two vehicles approaching them were involved in road rage.

It was around midnight Thomas and her friends were heading west on Browns Bridge Road. Gainesville police said Michael Williams, 48, rammed a vehicle that was in front of him. When he illegally passed that vehicle he hit Gerrish's car head-on.

"He had to be going through something to have that kind of rage, that kind of hurt inside of him that he would antagonize somebody down the road," Thomas said.

Gerrish and Williams died on impact. Thomas and Archbold were seriously injured.

Thomas sat on her couch with her left leg propped up on a pillow and a brace on her knee as she wiped away tears.

"I'm going to learn to really forgive over time but it's hard. He's [Williams} gone now but still I try to find some way to forgive him for hitting us and killing my new friend."

Before the accident, Thomas was pursuing a singing career.

She auditioned for American Idol and The Voice. Thomas said she will use her voice to help heal the hurt that crash caused.

"This is something that I will be writing about because I know this is a gift from God, and I know about the healing power."
