Zoo Atlanta names twin panda cubs

Posted: Updated:

In a long-awaited ceremony Wednesday, Zoo Atlanta officials named its twin giant panda cubs Mei Lun and Mei Huan.

In keeping with Chinese tradition, the zoo announced the names of the cubs on the 100th day since their birth. The names come from ancient Chinese idioms which mean 'something indescribably beautiful and magnificent.'

"These are the most awesome animals," said zoo volunteer Mary Jo Acree. "I've been working with them for quite a few years and telling people about them. They are wonderful, and this is going to describe them really great."

The cubs are the first surviving pair of giant panda cubs ever born in the U.S. The zoo is planning to place them on exhibit to the public in late fall.
