Vets warn about dog treats from China

MARIETTA, GA (CBS46) -

The FDA issued a new warning this week about pet jerky-related illness. The agency asked veterinarians to tell owners of the risks and provide samples from affected pets.

Since 2007, the FDA has received thousands of complaints of the chicken jerky manufactured in China making dogs and cats sick. It estimates more than 500 pets have died.

Dr. Phil Good of the Town and Country Veterinary Clinic in Marietta said the best advice he had is for owners to read the label and give their animals products manufactured in the U.S.

The FDA has not issued a recall of any products because it has not been able to pinpoint the exact problem.

Good said there are a lot of factors. "We don't know where they are getting their ingredients and how stringent their processes are," said Good.

He said affected animals have the following symptoms: no appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and a big drop in energy. Owners should take their pet to see a veterinarian.
