Ride mishap leaves Georgia State Fair visitors worried

HAMPTON, GA (CBS46) -

After a North Carolina fair ride left several people injured, locals are weary about rides at the Georgia State Fair, which opened Friday afternoon.

CBS Atlanta caught up with inspectors as they looked over each of the 44 rides at the fair on Friday afternoon, checking each ride's frame, bolts that keep it together, moving parts and safety restraints.

Mark Lovell, of the Georgia State Fair, said the company that ran the ride in North Carolina is based in Georgia but does not have any rides at this fair.

"It's very unfortunate things went awry there and we hate it for them," Lovell said. "We work with the best ride companies in the country. Most of the rides here are from a good old Georgia boy."

Grandfather Dan Howington said he does have concerns about sending his grandkids on rides, but has trusted the Georgia State Fair for years.

"You always worry when they get on rides, you want to make sure that hopefully they put them up safely," Howington said. "I kind of look and see if the ride looks fairly new, and kind of look and see who is operating the rides."
