A former Cobb County Sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for sex assaults against inmates.
Alvin Blake Sutherland, 52, pleaded guilty Monday to sexual assault against a person in custody.
Sutherland acknowledged having sexual encounters with five female inmates at the Cobb County Jail and elsewhere. The acts, some of which were forced, are believed to have occurred between June 2009 and Jan. 11.
Sutherland was arrested Jan. 18 and has been held without bond in the Douglas County Jail.
The judge called his actions "deplorable and despicable" and followed the recommendation of the assistant district attorney and sentenced Sutherland to 40 years in prison, with 20 to serve in custody.
Sutherland will also have to be registered as a sex offender.
Sutherland's 11-year-old daughter was among three people who asked the court for leniency during the emotional hearing.
"My dad has so much love inside of him," Dasani Sutherland told the court through tears. "Please let my dad come home with his dear family."
