Atlanta doctor: Unprescribed contact lenses can make you go blind

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

It seems they are the Halloween accessory just about everyone wants. Pick a color you can have it.

Want to look like a cat or vampire? It's possible, however, that although over the counter contacts may look cool and fun, wearing them can cause vision problems.

"You can get severe infections involving the cornea of your eye that requires very aggressive antibiotic therapy," said Dr. Jeffrey Hackleman, an optometrist with Heritage Vision Center. "In other cases, patients may never recover normal vision. After Halloween, me and my partners see a lot of patients who were injured wearing the colored contacts."

Federal law prohibits the sale and purchase of colored contact lenses without a prescription, but a CBS Atlanta News investigation found the illegal lenses readily available at a number of convenience stores and costume shops. If you are convicted of buying or selling colored contact lenses without a prescription, you can be fined thousands of dollars and face prison time.
