ATLANTA (CBS46) -

If you've been waiting for the speed limit to increase on Interstate 285 in metro Atlanta, you won't have to wait much longer, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Friday is the big reveal, but the new permanent increase is only for motorists traveling along the south-loop.

The southern portion of the perimeter (south of Interstate 20) will be set at a static 65 mph.

CBS Atlanta News caught up with folks driving along that stretch of the interstate, they were eager to talk about the need for a speed increase in the area.

"I think it's about time they finally did it," said William Alford.

"I'm the type of driver, I like to go over 55," said Derrell Bassett.

"I find myself traveling at 70-mph on average," said Kennyah Brooks.

Around this same time next year, the northern portion of the perimeter (north of Interstate 20)will have variable speed limit based on traffic congestion, but with a maximum speed limit of 65 mph. The digital signs will also inform the motorist why the speed is being reduced at that particular time.
