ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

You'll be able to legally drive a little faster on part of Interstate 285 starting Friday.

The speed limit on the southern portion of the I-285 loop, from Interstate 20 west to I-20 east, will jump to 65 miles per hour.

Signs with the new posted speed limit, covered in black plastic, will be unveiled around noon.

Many drivers CBS Atlanta News spoke with were already driving faster than 55 mph just to keep up with the flow of traffic.

"I find myself traveling in excess of 70-mph on average," said Keenyah Brooks.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is planning to raise the speed on the northern part of the loop this time next year.

The northern portion will have a variable speed limit, partly because it is most congested at peak travel times.
