Sick child inspires teacher to bring awareness to organ donation

Posted: Updated:

When a second-grader at Arnold Mill Elementary was hospitalized last month for a congenital heart defect, his teacher felt the need to do something.

Bronco Reese, 7, was hospitalized on Oct. 21 and will remain in the hospital until he can get a heart transplant.

Deb Havens told CBS Atlanta News that her students miss Bronco and ask about him all the time.

"We just want him to do what the doctor says and get back to us as soon as possible," said Havens.

A parent herself, Havens felt a strong desire to do something to help get the word out about the need for pediatric organ donations, so she started an online petition.

"I guess it would be a way to help your child live on by giving another child life," said Havens.

Classmates have sent video messages to Bronco and written well wishes on a poster hanging out their classroom.

CBS Atlanta News talked to Bronco's parents Scott and Joanna about the kind words and gestures. His father became emotional.

"They said they look at his desk every day and imagine him there. It's emotional," said Reese.

If you want to help, the family has set up an online donation page
