Gainesville fire fighters canvass, install smoke detectors after weekend fire

Posted: Updated:

A Gainesville family found out the hard way just how important it is to have smoke detectors in your home.

Cindy Lopez's home caught fire early Saturday morning.

"We were all sleeping," said Lopez.

One of Lopez's neighbors shot cell phone video of the fire. Investigators said a space heater sparked it.

Lopez said her house was already filled with flames and smoke when they woke up.

"I was looking for the kids when the smoke got me," said Lopez.

During the chaos, all the adults and two kids got out of the house when they realized Lopez's 7-year-old grandson was still inside.

Fortunately, two Gainesville police officers arrived just in time to help the child get out a bedroom window.

Lopez said she will make sure there are several smoke detectors in their next home.

"We need them because that's a sign to tell us when to get out when there's a fire, especially when you got kids you need that," said Lopez.

"You never know when a fire is going to strike but you always want to be prepared," said Gainesville fire Capt. Keith Smith.

Smith said that weekend fire prompted the fire department to canvass Lopez's neighborhood to make sure everyone has working smoke detectors.

Smith said the fire department will provide and install smoke detectors to anyone in the city who needs them. All you have to do is call.
