ATLANTA (AP) -

Former President Jimmy Carter plans to speak at a conference on the death penalty in Atlanta.

The Carter Center and the American Bar Association's Death Penalty Due Process Review Project are hosting the daylong National Symposium on the Modern Death Penalty in America on Tuesday.

The event will feature a series of panels on issues that affect death row inmates from arrest to execution. It aims to build upon the American Bar Association's analysis of death penalty systems in 12 states that account for nearly two-thirds of the executions in the modern death penalty era in the U.S.

The conference will feature remarks by Carter and by American Bar Association president James R. Silkenat, as well as a call to action by Southern Center for Human Rights president Steve Bright.
