Driver charged in hit and run accident on Ogeechee Road

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's Traffic Investigators are searching for the driver involved in a hit and run accident Friday morning.

It happened at approximately 5:56 a.m. Metro responded to reports of a vehicle accident involving a bicyclist on Ogeechee Road and Tremont Road. Upon arrival, investigators observed that the driver had fled the scene, leaving the bicyclist, Gregory Scott Cassell, 44, with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

SCMPD says 74-year-old Slaten Armstrong has been charged with felony hit and run with serious injuries after he called Emergency 911 to turn himself in.

Those who work along Ogeechee Road, like Stephen Burgstiner, say they see wrecks on this road all the time. Burgstiner says not only has he been in an accident there, but someone crashed into their company's sign, too.

"Our own company's business sign got taken out in an accident. The whole sign got knocked over so we don't have a sign any more beucase it wouldn't make sense to put another one up there."

Burgstiner says something needs to be done so these wrecks don't keep happening."Overall, this whole intersection here needs to be revamped for safety for everyone."

Fortunately, the cyclist injured in Friday's hit and run is expected to survive. Metro's Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating.

Anyone with information on this collision is asked to call Crimestoppers at 912.234.2020 or text CRIMES (274637). Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
