Attorneys for a 12-year-old Paulding County boy who died while under the watch of the Division of Family and Children Services (DFACS) said they will consider filing a lawsuit against the state.
Police say Eric Forbes was severely abused by his father for several years.
"Eric can't be just another statistic," said L. Chris Stewart, an attorney for Forbes' mother.
Stewart and his law partner said the DFACS system is broken and must be fixed.
"I think even they will admit they dropped the ball," said attorney Eugene Felton. "That it's just been repeated failures and that they've known about it. This is not something that's a secret."
Forbes is just one of several children who have died under DFACS' oversight.
Emani Moss and Markea Berry were both allegedly starved to death.
"Those are souls and individuals that had bright futures," said Stewart. "We don't know what they could have become. They could have become the next president. They could have become the next governor or mayor. Those are lives lost that can't come back. "
Gov. Nathan Deal has said he wants to give DFACS an additional $27 million in next year's budget. It would allow the agency to hire more workers and better manage the system.
"I salute the governor for taking those actions, but it's past Oct. 11, 2013 when our client was murdered," said Stewart.
